Woodbury, NY, June 23, 2025 — We at SterlingRisk wanted to provide you with some information about a recent change to the New Jersey Fire Code that could affect your property—especially if you use mulch in your landscaping.
As of April 15, 2025, New Jersey has implemented changes to their Fire Code that ban the use of combustible mulch (like wood chips) within 18 inches of certain parts of buildings. This is all about reducing fire risks, especially in areas where mulch has been known to cause or spread fires.
Here’s what you need to know:
- No wood mulch within 18 inches of:
- Buildings and structures
- Decks, porches, and balconies
- Designated smoking areas
- What to use instead: Noncombustible materials like stone, gravel, or sand
- Who’s affected: Most commercial properties and multi-family buildings
- Who’s exempt: Single-family homes and townhouses that are owner-occupied, and buildings made entirely of noncombustible materials (like warehouses)
Even if your property is exempt, the state is encouraging everyone to follow the new guidelines to help keep communities safer.
