National Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 3–9, 2026. Hurricane season begins June 1. Even storms that do not make direct landfall can disrupt operations, damage property, and complicate recovery. The time to prepare is now, before a named storm is in the forecast and vendors, supplies, and coverage options become harder to secure.

Assess Your Risk

Review your facilities, operations, vendor relationships, and any geographic vulnerabilities. If your business depends on suppliers or distribution routes in coastal regions, disruptions there become your disruptions. Supply chain exposure is one of the most underestimated elements of storm risk for businesses not located in hurricane zones.

Update Your Continuity Plans

Confirm that your remote access capabilities are functional, team leads have defined roles and decision-making authority, communication protocols are current, and alternate work locations have been identified. Continuity plans written one or two years ago may not reflect personnel changes, new locations, or shifts in how your operations run.

Secure Your Property and Data

Document your physical assets and back up critical systems to an off-site or cloud-based location. Reinforce known structural weak points now, before a storm watch is issued and local vendors are unavailable.

Review Your Coverage

Do not wait until after a storm to discover coverage gaps. Wind and flood are frequently separate policies with separate deductibles. Business interruption coverage often includes waiting periods before coverage applies. Contact your SterlingRisk account representative to confirm that your coverage reflects your current operations, asset values, and risk profile.

SterlingRisk’s Hurricane Preparedness Guide is available here and covers these topics in detail.
